摘要
The aim of this work has been to explore the compatibility between illness, suffering, and moral flourishing. To this end, I began by identifying a theoretical framework capable of accommodating such a perspective. I thus introduced virtue care ethics; this integrated approach allows to preserve the relational and contextual insights of care ethics, with virtue theory’s focus on character development. As shown, care ethics constitutes a vital framework, as it foregrounds the centrality of care in human life and reminds us of our fundamental interdependence. Furthermore, it emphasizes that care is, at its core, a relational practice whose effectiveness depends not only on the caregiver’s competence but also on the care receiver’s openness to engage in the caring relationship. In this sense, character formation proves essential for both the caregiver and the cared-for.
