The human individual is not an atom; the concept of society is inherent in that of the individual. Therefore, no true individual or Ego would exist without an alter, which is his basic socius, or an object, which is not merely a thing opposed to a subject, but rather a subject like himself. When subject and object are considered in their immediacy, both concepts are revealed as abstract, and their concrete reality is found in their synthesis. The self-constitutive act of the Ego, which involves the cancellation of the pure objectivity of the object and the transcendence of the pure subjectivity of the subject, occurs simultaneously.
