Among the figures that have presented Japanese folklore to the world, there are few that are as important as Lafcadio Hearn (1850–1904). Although he was not proficient in the Japanese language and could only experience Japanese stories by means of his wife Koizumi Setsu’s (小泉セツ, 1868-1932) retelling, Hearn remains one of the most beloved and celebrated authors in Japan. His renditions of Japanese legends and customs played an important role in introducing Meiji (明治, an era that extended from 1868 to 1912) Japan to a global audience, and his works have been celebrated around the world as faithful renditions of Japanese folklore.
