Snake Island (ostriv Zmiinyi), the islet located off the northwestern Black Sea coast about 40 kilometres east of the Danube Delta and 150 kilometres south of Odesa, has received significant international media attention since Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine. The island has quickly proved its importance both to military operations in southern Ukraine and to the control of Black Sea shipping lanes vital to Ukraine’s grain exports and economic survival. With the brave response of the Ukrainian border guards to the initial Russian attack on 24 February 2022, and the successful Ukrainian reoccupation of the island in June 2022, the Snake Island has taken on a special symbolism for Ukraine’s resistance to Russian invasion.1
