With tireless energy and passion, Erika Mann worked as a war correspondent, reporting from dangerous places in Europe and in the Middle East during the Second World War. She also gave lectures on the future of Germany and sought to enlighten people about the nature of National Socialism. In her war reports, radio interviews, and articles, she speaks with confidence, confrontation and provocation, adopting a visionary outlook. In doing so, she experiments with new forms of representation, pervaded by a critical and personal impulse, while challenging the notion of journalistic neutrality. As a result, she transforms the observer into an active participant. Rather than simply “reporting,” therefore, it might be more appropriate to speak of “bearing witness,” a phrase that reveals the vulnerability and imperfection of her status.
