Collodi’s Pinocchio is world-famous. But less well known are the so-called “Pinocchiate”, which form a genre of their own in Italian children’s and youth literature. These are further stories (further adventures of the burattino) that were invented and published by various authors at the beginning of the 20th century. Of interest here is a subgroup of tales published at the same time as the Italian Fascism or colonial war, in which the wooden puppet (as a representative of Italian youth) is sent to the front or to Africa or fights against the Austrians. This paper examines such “Pinocchiate” on the example of Bruno Bruni’s Pinocchietto contro l’Austria (1915).
