After more than 100 years of the ecumenical dawn and after 30 years of the political turn in central and eastern Europe one can hardly speak of real successes on the road to the unity of the churches. The ecumenical dialogues have surrendered to the “clash of ecclesiologies.” That means that ecclesiologies still indicate the measures for judging the other churches. Theological consensus documents have virtually no effects on the ecclesiastical reality. “Ecumenical theology“ as a fundamental category has not become the “queen” or “future” of the disciplines in the theological departments but has mutated into a kind of applied science.
