The exposome is the measure of all the exposures of a person in a lifetime and the effect of these exposures on human health. Since the creation of the concept (Wild, 2005) three domains of the exposome have been identified: internal (unique to the individual), specific external (chemical contaminants and pollutants, occupational exposures and lifestyle factors) and general external (broader socioeconomic and psychological contexts) (Wild, 2012; DeBord et al., 2016). This encompasses exposure from diet and dietary supplements, medicinal and recreational drugs, personal care and consumer products, air and water pollution, physical activity, noise and radiation, as well as nonphysical factors such as socioeconomic status, access to green or blue spaces, or perception of one’s surroundings (Wild, 2012; Balcells et al., 2024). All these specific exposures and domains overlap and interact to a various degree which leads to specific or similar individual health outcomes. A significant subset of the exposome is commonly referred to as the chemical exposome, which includes all chemical substances and their associated transformation products, whether of biological or synthetic origin, that can enter the human body through pathways such as ingestion, inhalation, or dermal absorption (Balcells et al., 2024).
