The growing interest in soil health reflects a heightened appreciation of the role that soils play in food provisioning and other essential ecosystem services, as well as concerns about physical, chemical and biological soil degradation. Healthy soil supports growing high-yielding crops, utilizing nutrients and water efficiently, fostering soil biology, increasing resilience to extreme weather events, and providing a range of other ecosystem services such as protection of air and water quality (Reicosky, 2018a, 2018b). Ways of improving soil health are increasingly seen as central to sustainable crop production (Horwath, 2022). However, sustainable soil management clearly requires accurate, standardized and accessible ways to measure and monitor soil health (van Es & Thies, 2023).
