Tropane alkaloids (TAs) are naturally occurring compounds present in numerous species of plants, being the most prevalent in the Solanaceae family (González-Gómez et al., 2022a). Over 200 types of TAs are known. Still, the most researched ones are atropine and scopolamine due to their pharmacological importance through their non-selective inhibition of the muscarinic acetylcholine receptors (Kohnen-Johannsen and Kayser, 2019). Moreover, due to its pharmaceutical status and economic interest, the global demand for these TAs has skyrocketed, either through the cultivation of TA-containing plants (such as Australian Duboisia), through the synthetic transformation of an intermediate compound (tropinone), or through biotechnological approaches (including plant cell cultures and microbial production) (Kohnen-Johannsen and Kayser, 2019; Srinivasan and Smolke, 2021).
