Advances in human biomonitoring to assess levels of dietary exposure to potentially harmful chemicals from food or other sources

In recent decades, human biomonitoring (HBM) has emerged as a pivotal tool in environmental health research, providing critical insights into the levels of potentially harmful chemicals in the human body. HBM of biomarkers of exposure and effects provide an efficient means of measuring human exposure to chemical substances. Initially applied in occupational medicine for health protection, the development of sensitive analytical methods in blood and urine provided the capacity to measure much lower concentrations in human population to assess environmental exposures (Angerer et al., 2007).
