Summary models are simple, yet are built on solid understanding of underlying processes, balancing simplicity and robustness (Monteith, 1996). The LINTUL (Light INTerception and UtiLisation) models are such summary models in which many detailed processes are left out and captured by some simpler concepts. The LINTUL approach has been used extensively in teaching as its simplicity allows students to study and understand key processes and interactions between crops and their environment in a quantitative manner. At the same time, it has also been used frequently for research purposes, either for studies where a summary model fits the purpose of the study or in cases where less detailed crop physiological observations are available. In such cases, the LINTUL approach is attractive because important model parameters can be easily derived from observations.
