The economics of precision agriculture

Much is demanded of farming: to produce high-quality food in a sustainable manner, provide livelihoods for farmers, retain natural ecosystems and provide diverse ecosystem services (Giller et al., 2021), which in reality involve tradeoffs. This amidst increasing price and diminishing availability and quality of natural resources, growing scarcity and cost of labour, unpredictable policies, volatility in market and weather conditions ageing of the farming population, among other things.
