Developments in proximal soil sensing for precision agriculture

In the contemporary world, a key challenge is to guarantee food supply sustainability whilst minimizing environmental effects. Soil conservation and adequate long-term stewardship towards modern agricultural systems are pivotal to ascertaining adequate food and biomaterial production in the future. Since the emergence of the precision agriculture management strategy, ‘farming by soil’ has been a popular approach to pursuing the sustainability of soil resources (Larson and Robert, 1991). Under this approach, agricultural land management is expected to account for spatial soil heterogeneity and respond to local needs. Most of these local needs cannot be accurately assessed without reliable, scalable and affordable means to recognize and quantify spatial and temporal dynamics of key soil attributes.
