Biological products are often touted as a major tool in the future of insect pest management due to their utility, specificity and safety, both environmentally and for vertebrates. Biopesticides can be defined broadly to include all pesticidal bioproducts, including commercially available predators and parasites, as well as products from microorganisms or plant extracts. The definition of a biopesticide can even include genetically modified plants (Marrone 2019; Glare and Nollet 2023), or definitions can be more limited. For the purposes of this chapter, I will concentrate on microbial-based biopesticides, formulations of microbes, nematodes and their metabolites used in the control of pest insects, sometimes called bioinsecticides.
