Conventional chemical pesticides currently have the largest portion of the market for externally applied insect pest control worldwide (Damalas and Koutroubas, 2018). However, the growth of the world’s population, climate change, and globalization place increasing demands on agriculture and other sectors for innovative and agile pest control strategies (Calicioglu et al., 2019; Charles et al., 2010; Bertelsmeier, 2021; Hulme, 2009). Recognition of these needs is reflected in government-driven initiatives, such as sustainable development and agriculture concepts and goals of the United Nations 2030 agenda (Fenibo et al., 2021), the European Green Deal (EC, 2019), efforts to support the global bioeconomy (e.g. EC, 2018, 2019; Exec. Order No. 14081, 2022), and the State of California’s Sustainable Pest Management Roadmap (CalDPR, 2023). It is also seen in the growing awareness of the impacts of chemicals on food safety and the environment and the desire among consumers for alternatives to conventional chemical pesticides (Damalas and Koutroubas, 2018; Fenibo et al., 2021). Biopesticides present alternatives to conventional chemical pesticides and can play a key role in meeting these needs. With the growing demand for sustainability, biopesticides are and will be important tools for insect pest control in the future.
