In 2006, the Nobel Prize in Medicine was awarded to American scientists Craig Mello and Andrew Fire for the discovery of RNA interference (RNAi), a natural silencing mechanism leading to the temporary disruption of gene expression at the transcriptional or post-transcriptional level. This mechanism operates through the production of a micro-RNA (miRNA) molecule which specifically recognizes the messenger RNA (mRNA) of a target gene, preventing the formation of the corresponding protein. The initial discovery of RNAi occurred in the nematode Caenorhabditis elegans; subsequently, it was confirmed that this mechanism is widely utilized across eukaryotic organisms. The process is used as a natural defense system capable of identifying ‘non-self’ genetic material (environmental RNA) and can target invading nucleic acids, such as those from viruses.
