Insects represent an abundant and dominant life form on Earth, successfully colonising the widest range of habitats despite an ever-expanding human population and changing climatic conditions.[1] Given the incalculable sum of insects in existence, with habitats across all agricultural economies, insects represent a major threat to our food security. Harmful insects, which occupy an important subsection of all insect species, present markets with enormous social, health and economic pressures by harbouring and transmitting plant diseases and causing direct crop damage. Ultimately, this translates to an annual loss of 40% of global crop production, according to the World Economic Forum[2] highlighting the necessary role that expanding the repertoire of regulated Plant Protection Products (PPPs) will play in securing food for the future. Food security is becoming increasingly pressurised by existing and emerging pest and disease pressures and compounded by the increasing difficulty in gaining access to regulated insecticides, given the mounting legislation in leading national and supranational market economies. There are currently 65 insecticides (low-risk active substances) approved in the European Union, of which 14 will expire in the next 10 years.[3] Greener regulatory policies will drive the need to develop environmentally friendly alternatives as part of IPM approaches, avoiding unwanted mortality in beneficial pollinating insect species and reducing residues within the soil and groundwater. There is also increasing pressure from consumers, who are ever more aware of the processes involved in food production and who increasingly consider conventional chemical intervention in crop protection to be unwelcome. A further major current challenge to the insecticide marketplace is the dynamic nature whereby pest species adapt to become resistant to both chemical agents in widespread use and the changing climate.
