Developing plant-based insect biocontrol agents

Synthetic pesticides dominate the agricultural market due to their highly effective role in crop protection. However, this well-established practice results in some hazardous effects derived from the high persistence of residues in the environment, including agricultural soils (Demeter et al., 2021; Khursheed et al., 2022). Another major concern that is not always addressed when designing a pest management programme is the generation of resistance. The current approach to this problem involves limiting the dose and rate of pesticide application within the framework of integrated pest management. However, even though sublethal doses can prevent and mitigate insect damage, they may lead to the accumulation of resistance factors, resulting in a resistant population. Lower doses may delay single resistance gene evolution but may accelerate multifactorial polygenic resistance (Hawkins et al., 2019; Muniz-Junior et al., 2023).
