As biological control programmes of insect pests evolve and seek to become more effective, they increasingly require a greater understanding of the genetic, neurobiological, morphological, behavioural, ecological and environmental parameters associated with the targeted species. For thrips and other small insects, a thorough understanding of the components, processes and behaviour in host finding, including the constraints imposed by miniaturisation, will provide the basis for more informed research and application for pest management including biological control (Bernays and Chapman 1994; Döring 2014; Schnaitmann et al. 2020; Ge et al. 2022; Hu et al. 2023; Liu et al. 2023).
