For around two decades, authors have clearly established that women are the main caretakers of small-scale chicken in most countries and that poultry are one of their only sources of income compared to men (Alders, 1996; Kitalyi, 1998; Guèye, 2000, 2005; Alexander et al., 2004; Bagnol, 2009a, 2009b; Abdirahman et al., 2023). In many rural areas around the world, income and productivity generated from small-scale poultry raising are used to support in particular children’s education, household health, and family food, and to contribute to numerous feasts and rituals (Dumas et al., 2017; de Bruyn et al., 2015; FAO, 2014; Bagnol, 2001, 2009; Wong et al., 2018). Thus, many programmes aimed at improving livelihoods cantred their interventions on improving small-scale poultry production systems.
