Understanding and dealing with antibiotic resistance in poultry production
摘要
Poultry farming is a critical component of global agriculture, providing a vital source of protein to consumers, employment to those working in the industry and contributing to economic activity worldwide. The consumption of poultry meat and eggs continues to rise steadily, driven by population growth, changing dietary habits and increased consumer awareness of its nutritional benefits. In addition to its significance in food security, poultry farming plays a significant role in rural development, particularly in developing countries, offering opportunities to millions of smallholder farmers. The economic contributions of the poultry industry are substantial, with billions of dollars invested annually across the various stages in the supply chain, from production to processing, distribution and retail. Poultry production thus represents a significant share of the agricultural sector in many countries, contributing to national gross domestic product (GDP) and international trade. Moreover, the industry’s adaptability and efficiency make it a resilient component of farming economies, capable of withstanding fluctuations in demand and market conditions (National Chicken Council, https://www .nat iona lchi cken council .org, Accessed 1st March 2024).
