Awareness of the key function that soils and their biodiversity (accounting for 25% of the total biodiversity on Earth (European Commission, 2022)) play in agricultural productivity and the health of the entire planet is increasing. This has been translated into important regulatory initiatives and actions at global and continental levels to maintain or increase soil health. For example, goals #6 (drinking water and sanitation), #12 (responsible production and consumption), #13 (climate action) and #15 (life on earth) of the United Nations’ 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) for 2030 (United Nations, 2015) are directly related to soil health; and others, including goal #2 (zero hunger), depend indirectly on soil quality and health.
