The earliest published study on the use of housefly as an animal feed ingredient appears to be from 1969 (Calvert et al., 1969), though the idea is quite a bit older: Calvert credits a 1919 German paper for the idea of rearing fly larvae (Lindner, 1919). The impulse to cite very old studies of houseflies appears itself to be something of a tradition: Lindner, drawing upon what by 1919 was evidently already an ancient and extensive body of literature on fly biology, cites a calculation by Antonie van Leeuwenhoek (1632–1723) on their extraordinary fecundity.
