Addressing the global challenge of feeding a growing population within environmental limits requires a shift towards circular food systems (van Riel et al., 2023). Amongst several food production methods, aquaculture has emerged as a crucial solution to meet rising food demands, alleviate poverty, enhance food security, and combat nutritional deficiencies, all with a lower environmental impact compared to alternative animal-source foods (Asche et al., 2022). Currently, aquaculture stands out as the world’s fastest-growing food-producing sector, contributing a record 49.2% to the global production of aquatic animals in 2020. The sector’s remarkable expansion and intensification are evident across regions, with a total production of 122.6 million tonnes, valued at USD 264.8 billion. Inland waters contributed 54.4 million tonnes, whilst marine and coastal aquaculture yielded 68.1 million tonnes. Notably, most regions, except Africa, have witnessed continued aquaculture growth, driven by key producers like Chile, China, and Norway. However, challenges persist, hindering the sector’s pursuit of sustainable outcomes. To ensure the sustainability and economic growth of aquaculture, a focus on innovative and sustainable practices, particularly in aquafeed formulation and feeding practices, is crucial (FAO, 2022).
