Diseases affecting production of yellow mealworms as a protein source

The mass production of edible insects is intensifying. As one of the more promising species produced on an industrial scale designed for livestock feed, the yellow mealworm, Tenebrio molitor, is entering a new phase of intensification following its authorization as human food by the European Commission (Turck et al., 2021). As such, the risk of pathogens that could cause diseases in the yellow mealworms and affect productivity is receiving renewed attention. To this day, information on pathogens of insects in mass production systems remains limited. In the past, insect husbandry systems were focused on fewer species, such as the silk moth (Bombyx mori) or the honeybee (Apis mellifera). Furthermore, the discovery and description of pathogens occurred as a result of epidemic disease outbreaks in insect populations or were based on observations on a few diseased individuals (Andreadis and Weseloh, 1990; Becnel and Andreadis, 2014; Brun, 1984; Majumdar et al., 2008; Valles and Chen, 2006).
