Black soldier flies (BSF) (Hermetia illucens) have been produced on a large scale using various production methods and food substrates. Depending on cultural methods and conditions, food substrate, and other characteristics of the different production facilities, several microorganisms that could be considered potential pathogens have been identified from either the culture environment or the insects themselves (Joosten et al. 2020, Gorrens et al. 2021a, Klüber et al. 2022). However, many of the organisms listed in some publications have never been observed affecting the soldier fly in large-scale production systems. Some authors doubt that BSF are immune to pathogens and indicate that the lack of reports on pathogen outbreaks does not indicate that these do not occur (Barrett et al. 2023).
