Improving herd health management and disease prevention in organic dairy cattle farming
摘要
Animal health and welfare are the foundations of thriving and ethical animal farming systems and are essential to ensuring the health and safety of our food. The scale and nature of animal farming globally necessitates a critical approach to how animals are reared, kept and managed within our food system (Acari, 2017). Ensuring animal welfare is at the forefront of our food production systems – is not only an ethical issue but is now considered an inherent part of what defines sustainable farming and key to fulfilment of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (Health for Animals, 2021). This has been driven by a growing concern amongst consumers about how we care for farm animals and manage their health and welfare within our food production systems (see Livestock’s Long Shadow, FAO; Alonso, 2020).
