Tools and strategies for optimizing the reproductive performance of sows
摘要
Reproductive performance in swine breeding herds is very high based on the average number of pigs born per litter and the average farrowing rate for mated sows. Litter size has continued to increase (Fig. 1) in the modern sow over years (Pigchamp, 2022). This trend is a likely result of genetic selection for higher litter size at birth that originates from increases in the correlated traits of ovulation rate and number of embryos (Rutherford et al., 2013; Soede and Kemp, 2019).
