Antonie Van Leeuwenhoek, often recognized as the father of optic microscopy, was the pioneer in studying spermatozoa (Karamanou et al., 2010). In 1677, when Leeuwenhoek first reported his observations on spermatozoa, many of his peers surmised that the sample had simply decayed. Contrarily, Leeuwenhoek perceived them as an intrinsic component of semen, coining the term ‘animalcules spermatiques’ or the seeds of life. This marked the initiation of the andrology field of study (Howards, 1997; Lane, 2015). While Leeuwenhoek is not credited for inventing the light microscope, he was instrumental in popularizing and refining its use. This technology not only facilitated the discovery of sperm cells but also fostered the growth of microbiology.
