Emerging roles for soil Bacteroidetes in complex carbon and organic phosphorus cycling

The phylum Bacteroidetes (new nomenclature, Bacteroidota) represents a numerically abundant, yet poorly understood group of Gram-negative bacteria found in soil. The most common belong to the families Sphingobacteraceae, Chitinophagaceae, Flavobacteriaceae and Hymenobacteraceae, with Flavobacterium and Chitinophaga being the most well-studied genera (Larsbrink and McKee, 2020). Whilst Bacteroidetes are non-flagellated, they can rapidly move across surfaces via ‘gliding motility’, which allows them to swarm (McBride and Kempf, 1996). In addition, many representatives of this phylum are intrinsically resistant to the antibiotic kanamycin. When grown on a solid medium, Flavobacterium and Chryseobacterium (family Flavobacteriaceae) form distinct orange-yellow colonies, resulting from the production of flexirubin (Reichenbach et al., 1980; Venil et al., 2014), whilst Pedobacter spp. are typically red-pink in colour (Dahal and Kim, 2016).
