Hedgerows in agricultural and horticultural systems occur worldwide with great diversity in their form and function (Montgomery et al. 2020). We focus on the role of hedgerows in promoting biodiversity and delivery of ecosystem services (Millennium Ecosystem Assessment 2005) in temperate agriculture. Hedgerows around the edges of fields, comprised of woody plant species, are common particularly in UK, Ireland and continental Europe. They are prominent features around the margins of cereal and non-cereal arable crops, pastoral fields, orchards, vineyards and other horticultural systems, and bioenergy crops. Hedgerows may be associated spatially with drains, banks, stone walls, conservation headlands, roadside verges, and woodland and grassland ecotones (Dover 2019). Hedges occupy 10% of the total land area and 43% of wildlife areas in northwest Europe (Larkin et al. 2019), and occur in temperate parts of North and South America.
