Land use has been linked to the production of food, feed, fibre and fodder for humans since human life began, but particularly with the beginnings of agriculture around 12 000 years ago. Since then, agriculture has gone through various phases of development. Early civilisations such as Ancient Egypt (3000– 1000 BCE) developed domestication and selective breeding of crops and livestock, preparation of land for crops through ploughing (using oxen), use of organic fertilisation, irrigation techniques and improved storage and transport (e.g. using wheeled carts), generating a sufficient food surplus to support large populations, urban centres, greater division/specialisation of labour and complex social and government structures.
