Measuring and modelling on-farm greenhouse gas emissions: the basis for achieving climate-neutral farming

The agricultural sector, forestry and other land use contribute around 24% of the global greenhouse gas emissions (GHGEs) (IPCC, 2014), with 10–14% directly coming from agriculture (Paustian et al., 2016). The major gases contributing to GHGEs from agriculture are carbon dioxide (CO2), methane (CH4) and nitrous oxides (N2O). While CO2 shows the largest emissions, the other two gases show a stronger impact on climate change due to their larger global warming potential (GWP). The GWP is a value that indicates the impact on the GHGE effect, with CH4 showing about 28 times, and N2O 273 times the impacts compared to CO2 over a hundred-year time period (IPCC, 2021). All three GHGEs are emitted from livestock, grasslands and croplands, but their relevance for different land uses varies. While CH4 is more relevant for the livestock production, CO2 and N2O are of higher relevance for crop and grassland systems. There are exceptions to this as, for example, CH4 is more relevant in rice cultivation and wetlands than the other GHGEs.
