The history of agriculture can be viewed as a series of key events dating back to around 10,000 years ago when tribes began collecting seeds from edible grasses and vegetation on their nomadic routes and replanting them in regions suitable for year-round cultivation. This was the start of the Neolithic Revolution, also called the First Agricultural Revolution, when human cultures transitioned from a lifestyle of hunting and gathering to one of agriculture and settlement. Since then, human culture has experienced other key events in the transformation of agriculture that have irrevocably altered the relationship between human societies and nature. The early exchange of agriculture knowledge and technology is attributed to a network of routes used by traders, including the “Silk Road” linking Asia and Europe, allowing agricultural and other products to spread from China to other countries from as early as 130 BCE1.
