In January 2023, the 64 ministers present at the 15th Berlin Agriculture Ministers’ Conference reiterated their support for the work of the Codex Alimentarius Commission (CAC) or Codex. Codex has 188 member nations, one member organisation (the European Union), and over 230 observers (including other intergovernmental organisations (IGOs) and non-governmental organisations (NGOs) with interest in the work of Codex). This year marks the 60th anniversary of Codex (CODEX@60) which allows for reflection on how fit Codex is for the challenges of the world of today and beyond. Some of these challenges, explored in this chapter, will need intensive intergovernmental debate.
