In 1987, the Rainforest Alliance was founded by a handful of young people who were concerned about rainforest destruction and wondered whether rewarding responsible forestry companies in the tropics, through third-party certification, might be a better approach to forest conservation than boycotting all tropical producers. Twelve years later, in 1999, a Belgian-Guatemalan coffee grower and a Dutch roaster applied the same principle to the sustainable coffee sector and founded the Utz Kapeh certification programme.2
