Focusing on such Left Spinozists as Negri, Deleuze and Althusser, the chapter is an analysis of the invention of Spinoza as an orphan of history and the role this has played in left thought. In contrast to these narratives, which represent Spinoza as a figure that breaks free from his historical and class conditions, the chapter re-situates Spinoza in the material relations of his day, through a close reading of Spinoza’s self-causing substance. The immanence of substance, the chapter argues, is a logic that closes off capital in itself. Univocity, it demonstrates, is a philosophical translation of economic inequality in the ethical language of being, making it instrumental in explaining (away) the contemporary relations of capital.
