In February 2023, Derek Mobley received yet another automated rejection email. This one arrived from a major telecommunications company—his 83rd rejection in 18 months. Each rejection came through the same system: Workday, Inc., a human resources software platform used by thousands of companies from Fortune 500 corporations to nimble startups. Each rejection email was nearly identical, thanking him for his interest and wishing him well in his job search. And each rejection, Mobley came to believe, was the result of discrimination baked into an algorithm.
