This chapter establishes the foundational argument for treating prompt engineering as a formal, standardized practice within the broader landscape of AI interaction. It positions prompts not as casual inputs but as structured design instruments that directly shape model behavior, output quality, and alignment with human intent. The discussion highlights the widespread inefficiencies caused by vague and unstructured prompts, linking them to measurable computational, financial, environmental, and social costs. Drawing on cross-domain examples, the chapter demonstrates how even minor improvements in prompt design can significantly reduce token usage and enhance response relevance. It further examines the ethical implications of prompting, emphasizing responsibility, accountability, and the risks of misinterpretation in high-stakes contexts. The communication gap between human intent and machine processing is analyzed, reinforcing the need for explicit, well-scaffolded instructions. Existing literature is reviewed to identify the absence of a unified, accessible standard. In response, the chapter introduces the Prompt Anatomy Blueprint as a human-centered framework for structured prompt design.
