Geocoding is the process of converting an address (e.g., “Via Veneto 202, Rome, Italy”) into geographic coordinates (latitude and longitude) for use on a map or by a positioning system. The reverse process is called reverse geocoding: it obtains an address from geographic coordinates (latitude and longitude).
