Shape is possibly the most important element in art. Certainly, the previous three – line, value, and color – are all integral in defining shape in an artwork. Without them there is no shape. One could suggest that it is their purpose. That’s because all objects have a shape, and much of visual art is involved in the representation of objects. Even when we think of an artwork as abstract, the basic components are frequently objects.
