Roughly speaking, percolation is the simulation of forest fires. You take a checkerboard-like pattern and randomly fill each field with a tree or desert. Then you set fire to all the trees along one side and watch how the fire spreads. If the probability exceeds a certain limit, the fire will spread to the other side. Below that limit, it will go out first.
