You might remember in Chapter 1 I described my beginnings to work on SQL and AI started in 2023. There is a bit more of the backstory for this. I remember talking to Asad Khan, our VP of SQL at the time, in the summer of 2023. He said, “Bob, please get engaged with AI.” I didn’t ask why because we all knew AI was coming in fast and hot to the industry. What I didn’t know is exactly what I should do. As we approached Microsoft Ignite (and the PASS Summit) in November of 2023, it became very clear to me that we were not prepared to showcase generative AI technology with SQL. At the same time, my colleagues Muazma Zahid and Davide Mauri were already looking at vectors and embeddings with Azure SQL.
