I was in Singapore during Design Week in 2024, sitting inside the old Parliament building where some of the events were being held. It wasn’t an active legislative space anymore, but you could still feel the intent in how it had been designed. Each seat had a small speaker and two dials, one to adjust volume, the other to select your preferred language, English, Malay, Mandarin, or Tamil. All four official languages of the country, right there on a simple interface embedded into the chair (see Image 12-1). You didn’t need to request anything. You didn’t need assistance. It was just built in. Quietly. Thoughtfully. Automatically.
