Software engineers cannot expect much sympathy for the predicament that we now face. For the last 50 years, we have automated processes that have displaced millions of workers and entire industries, all while being richly remunerated and pampered along the way. We have had it very good for a long time, and we now find ourselves in a position where the world needs a whole lot less of us. The 2025 StackOverflow Developer Survey ( ) accurately captured the morose mode, with a decrease in salary of 7% noted compared to the 2024 survey and 80% of developers reporting to be either unhappy or complacent in their current position.
