Users are establishing accounts on many social media and messaging applications to interact with their family and friends. Social applications such as Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, Snapchat, and WhatsApp enable users to engage with both familiar and unfamiliar individuals worldwide through the Internet. Cybercriminals are using these social media applications for social engineering and information collection to identify their targets. The utilization of social media platforms has markedly escalated in recent years, as individuals across all age demographics engage in engagement, cooperation, and content sharing. These applications generate vast amounts of data, providing opportunity for cybercriminals to exploit this information for harmful actions. Investigating authorities utilize the social media profiles of criminals to analyze their behavior and ascertain the purpose behind the crime. Mobile forensics and social media analysis are essential in all criminal activities, including rape, murder, robbery, etc. Social media analysis is directly associated with the preferences and aversions of criminals, their interests, psychological condition, affiliations, and more. Numerous terrorist organizations have utilized social media platforms and messaging applications for recruitment and disseminating anti-national operations in the past. This chapter elucidates many categories of data produced by social media and messaging applications, as well as the acquisition and forensic examination of social media platforms. This chapter further elaborates on forensic evidence that can be utilized to identify illegal actions through social media applications. This chapter addresses the technique and challenges of cloud forensics investigation, particularly in relation to data stored by social media platforms.
