In this chapter, we look at the elements of modern digital computation. The fundamental physical unit of computation is the transistor. The fundamental unit of information is the bit. Modern digital computers work by making use of three kinds of information: data, instructions, and pointers, which are used to keep track of the data and instructions in a computer’s mass-storage devices and memory.
