This chapter begins Part 4 of this study guide, corresponding to the fourth section of the DP-300 exam Learning Path. This part is on automation, an essential skill for any cloud database or systems administrator. One of the oft-repeated phrases cloud advocates say is “cattle, not pets.” We need to be able to manage a large group of SQL instances across multiple SQL services without expending additional effort per server. Automation is how we make that transition from taking care of a small number of beloved pets (servers) to the care, feeding, and maintenance of many profitable herd assets (SQL fleets or farms).
