Not all of Edmund Berkeley’s peers took the same position on social responsibility that he did. In light of what he saw as their disregard for the societal consequences of the technology they were developing, Berkeley would have to become the conscience of the computing field. And, as we will see, this often put him in conflict with prominent figures in his field.
